SAVANNAH - Dexter James Johnson, 69, died Monday, July 6, 2009 at his residence after a long and courageous battle with cancer. He was a native of Ohio and lived in Savannah for the past 18 years. He was a member of Wesley Oak United Methodist Church and was retired from the Michigan Public School System. Dexter will be remembered by his friends and family for his wonderful sense of humor and his love for trout fishing in the rivers of Michigan.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Neal and Della Johnson.

Dexter is survived by his wife of 46 years, Shirley T. Johnson, of Savannah, his son and daughter-in-law, Dan and Julie Johnson, of Linden, Michigan, his daughter and son-in-law, Jan and Tracy Mckelvey, of Phoenix, Arizona, two grandchildren, Lauren Ashley Johnson and Curtis James Johnson, both of Michigan. He is also survived by two brothers and sisters-in-law, Gary and Dianna Johnson, of Sebring, Florida, and Vern and Brenda Johnson, of Geneva, Ohio, one sister, Sharon Allen, of Newark, Delaware, and several nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, July 9, 2009, at Wesley Oak United Methodist Church with Rev. Lynn Drake and Rev. Billy Hester officiating.

Remembrances may be made to Wesley Oak United Methodist Church or Hospice Savannah.
